Plastic found in the oceans is a big deal for us. We might not realize this at first, but we are harming our own ecosystem. More than 90% of plastics are found in the oceans, and more than 8 million of our plastics ends up in the water bodies. Scientists have discovered that by 2050, there will be more plastics found in the oceans than marine species. The issue with plastic found in the water had begun many months or years back. This is not new. We continue to throw plastic in the wrong places. Species in the water are living things. We need to learn how to take care of them and our ecosystem. By throwing out the trash in the wrong places, we are killing those living species. Some ways we are harming the marine life is throwing out plastic in the bin when we can recycle, littering, and some daily used products go down the drain. In the end, all of this ends up in the oceans. Fishes can swallow our trash and die from that. Plastics are a big impact on the marine habitat as well. For example, the coral reefs are being damaged really badly. It has been said that the coral reefs are contaminated with plastic. The plastic clings to the coral especially the branching coral. The place that plastics stick to can kill or sicken the reef. When plastic is scraped against a coral, that can create a new opening. This new opening can then allow infections to travel in the coral and kill the habitat. This is how worst it can get for the water species. There are many people and companies trying to improve and resolve this situation. This includes Starbucks (got rid of straws), and Morrison's (a British supermarket, are using 100% brown recyclable paper bags). Slowly, and steadily, everyone is trying to improve. Some other people are turning plastic into something we can use or wear in our daily lives. Method introduced a hand soap in a bottle made from plastic debris. Pharrell Williams, singer, thought it would be a good idea to wear plastic. Pharrell partnered up with G-Star RAW. He is planning to introduce the world to denim jeans made entirely from ocean plastics. Ocean plastic is shredded into fiber alongside plastic water bottles, then formed into classy jeans, shirts, and hoodies. Until this point, this company has had refurbished around two million ocean plastics. Lastly, plastic bank had come up with a way to get rid of the plastic along the coastlines of the oceans and some that lie on the shores of the oceans. Plastic bank came up with a term called "social plastic," which treats abandoned plastic as a form of currency. Individuals in destitute communities collect plastics along the shores in exchange for WiFi access or electricity to charge their phones. What great ways people come up with to change the world! It’s not only the ocean that is going to suffer from all the plastic in the water. We are also going to suffer because we drink that same water after it’s filtered. There are invisible plastic particles found in the water we drink. These particles are called micro-plastics. They are fairly small but scientists have researched that it can harm our systems as well. Health researchers found that 90% of the micro-plastics are discovered in the bottled water. 90% of the world say it’s better to drink bottled water than tap water. Overall, we can say, the ones who drink water are getting what they deserve. We harm the marine ecosystem and we get the same thing back in the water we drink. Ways to help resolve this major problem is to quit using any plastic utensils or bags. There are many alternatives like glass, reusable shopping bags, and to recycle things you eat. The first step to changing the world starts from you. Help save the marine life and yourselves! If we don't fix this, sooner or later, we all would be in danger, and forget the marine life. It would all be gone.
